Tech Essentials Series: What is AI and does it matter?
About this event
A dialogue about Artificial Intelligence with John Warner
We’ll begin by moving beyond the headlines and hype to explain what AI really is, how it got here, and why it matters now. Then we’ll look at how it developed—from its conceptual origins in the 1940s through decades of breakthroughs, setbacks, and progress. Next, we’ll focus on Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Claude. How do they work? What can they do? What are their limitations?
How are they shaping communication, research, and creative work? We’ll conclude with an overview of machine learning—how computers can “learn” from data by finding patterns and making predictions, without needing to be programmed for each specific task.
This session is for anyone curious about AI’s growing role in society, education, and life. No tech background needed—just bring your curiosity and your questions.
